There are different ways to add text annotations depending on text length, sense and convenience in each particular case. This article covers following ones:
- Using chart subtitle is most simple and fast way
- Adding text on chart regardless of the time series
- Adding text linked to time series
- Supporting chart with huge text description
1. Using chart subtitle
Each chart on a dashboard layout can have subtitle. To add it, you can mouseover chart layout and open a chart in edit mode to see subtitle checkbox.
This is a good way if text annotation is short and doesn’t need to be linked to data points on a chart. Subtitles support dynamic feature, so that if a dashboard uses parameterization, dynamic subtitle can change itself according to selected filter. Dimension name should be put in {}, and after saving or changing selection it will show selected element from mentioned dimension.
2. Adding independent text on a chart
To add such text block go to appearance tab, “plot area” section and click on button “Add text block”. This block has simple options for font, background and borders. To change options or text click on it on a chart. Block can be placed in any part of a chart. Also its possible to create several text blocks. To see, edit or remove list of created block can be found under the button “add text block”.
3. Adding text linked to time series
If there is a requirement to connect text with data points its better use special text annotation tool. To use it go to appearance tab, “annotation section” and clock on “Add annotation” button.
Beside mentioned in text block options for font, background and borders, this tool allows change shape, select time series to connect, and point.
Point can be set as fixed time point, last available value with lag, max and min.
As well as text blocks, its possible to create several annotations with different options, for different series. To find list of created annotation use first dropdown field in the section
4. Supporting chart with huge text description
In case when huge text description is required to support chart its better just create separate text chart near the visualization.
